Whalefall

There is a concept in marine biology called a whalefall - the moment a whale dies at sea and sinks to the ocean floor, creating an entire ecosystem in its descent. Brian Duffield's Whalefall takes that idea somewhere considerably more claustrophobic. Based on Daniel Kraus's 2023 novel, the film follows Jay Gardiner (Austin Abrams), a young scuba diver who descends into the Pacific off Monterey Bay to recover the remains of his recently deceased father - and is swallowed whole by an 80-foot, 60-ton sperm whale. What follows is a one-hour countdown: that's how much oxygen he has left, and the only way out is through. Josh Brolin plays the father in flashback, Elisabeth Shue the mother, and the whole improbable thing is directed by Brian Duffield, the filmmaker behind No One Will Save You - arguably the most tension-per-minute film of the last decade. Produced by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, distributed by 20th Century Studios, and arriving in theaters October 16, 2026. The ocean has swallowed stranger things.
