Norway's Historic Knubben Concept

Snohetta plans to restore the 1937-built harbor bath Knubben as a present to the inhabitants of Arendal, Norway. The public space, which is slated to be completed in 2024, will take the form of an undulating, tiered landscape. The facility had a 33-foot diving platform, a children's pool, changing facilities, and a kiosk, all designed by Ketil Ugland. The new Knubben is viewed as an architectural answer to the past, preserving important elements but highlighting Arendal as a national and international tourist attraction. The new Knubben will be built on steel core piles, allowing the island's expanse and possibilities to be expanded even further. The architecture is influenced by the islets and skerries that dot the Norwegian coastline. It'll be a relaxing place to enjoy a hot summer evening, a gathering spot for cultural events, and a place to have a wonderful meal after an icy bath in the chilly sea.
