Set against the serene backdrop of Lake Joseph in Ontario, the Metrick Cottage & Boathouse by AKB Architects is a masterfully designed retreat that balances modern architectural expression with natural simplicity. Created for a multi-generational family, this year-round lakeside haven embraces both privacy and connection, thoughtfully crafted to enhance its relationship with the surrounding landscape.

The residence is composed of three subtly angled, interconnected volumes, or "pods"—a central communal space flanked by private bedroom wings. This unique layout creates sightlines that capture sweeping views of the lake and surrounding rock formations, while also allowing for individual retreat. Expansive windows, lime-washed interiors, and a minimalist approach to detailing reflect the restraint and beauty of nature, inviting it to be the main feature.

The exterior is wrapped in semi-charred fir, treated using the Japanese technique shou sugi ban for durability and textural richness. Inside, the home is fully clad in torrified ash, lending a warm, cohesive atmosphere that contrasts beautifully with the cool lake tones just beyond the glass. The use of natural materials and an earth-toned palette creates a refined yet grounded aesthetic that sits harmoniously within the rugged northern landscape.
