MAKENA HOUSE

Sitting along the Pacific coastline, the Makena Residence benefits from Maui's picturesque landscape, its privacy and sunlight. The house is located on a sandy slope of the island and presents an illusion of a single-story structure defined by a board-formed concrete wall that wraps around the courtyard. Behind the front facade, a full two-story program is revealed, lightly constructed of glass and steel, opening the living spaces and bedrooms to a vast seascape. To protect from direct sun and tropical storms, ten-foot roof overhangs and sliding screens offer an effective response to face the harsh coastal environment. The Hawaiian ocean breeze flows inside through the large sliding glass doors supported by ceiling fans to increase natural ventilation and reduce the usage of energy.
