The Whales, a collection of floating towns, has been designed by Justinian Khoo, the second finalist in Dezeen's Redesign the World competition powered by Twinmotion. These towns resemble pods of enormous marine mammals, proposed to be totally powered by renewable energy derived from the sea, sun, and wind. The waste from fish aquaculture would be used to fertilize crops on floating farms, providing protein-rich meals for city dwellers. Food waste would be composted to reduce landfill trash, and vegetation would be employed as a natural filtration system for wastewater. The designer believes that by relocating humans to floating cities, nature will be able to repopulate the planet's landmasses, restoring natural ecosystems and reversing climate change. This environmentally sustainable city merges the beauty of the ocean with a dedication to preserving all life on the planet by creating maintainable food supplies and using marine energy to keep the cities going without negatively impacting the environment and wildlife around them.
