VISIT PIER PAVILION

Pier Pavilion delivers innovative civic architecture in Barangaroo, Sydney, Australia.

Won in 2020 national competition, designed by Besley & Spresser, completed 2025. Envelope constructed from "oyster terrazzo"—specially formulated material combining over 500,000 recycled Sydney Rock Oyster shells with recycled aggregates, otherwise destined for landfill. 86 moment-resisting columns support long free-span structure with landscape roof featuring endemic planting, sandstone, and hollow logs attracting native insects and birds.

Large roof oculus creates circle of light roaming across ground and double colonnade. Interior includes freestanding servery with bar, store, and technical area for special events. Plan references Sydney Harbour's coves and peninsulas geometry. Won 1st Prize Concrete Institute of Australia 2025. Photography by Rory Gardiner. Functions as public repose space with harbour views.
