Nature Rocks: MVRDV’s Rock-Inspired Pathways and Pavilion on Taiwan’s Coast

Nature Rocks!, designed by MVRDV with HWC Architects, transforms Taiwan’s Jialeshui coastline into a series of rock-like tourist structures that blend with the natural surroundings.

Sculptural pavilions—shaped like fragments of the coastline—house visitor facilities such as a café, exhibition space, restrooms, and a visitor center with rooftop views. A broken-path approach reimagines the old straight road as cracks in stone, offering better access while preserving the environment. Forms echo Jialeshui’s natural sandstone formations; over time, concrete surfaces will age and become part of the landscape. Passive drainage cracks manage stormwater and encourage biodiversity, creating green corridors between forest and shore.

The result is infrastructure that serves visitors and feels grown, not built—nature enhanced, not replaced.
