Fathom

Directed by Drew Xanthopoulos, Fathom is an Apple TV documentary released in 2021 that explores one of the ocean’s most complex natives - the whale. Fathom follows two biologists on their journey to understand the elaborate communications of whales. The two biologists, Dr. Michelle Fournet and Dr. Ellen Garland goes to opposite ends of the ocean to learn more about a culture that has long predated our own. Dr. Michelle Fournet intends to use a ten-year-old playback system of growls, swops, and whups to speak with humpback whales – not just listen, but discuss. Dr. Ellen Garland, nine thousand miles south, follows the spread of a single whale song from Australia to French Polynesia, proving her theory that whales have a common culture comparable to how humans get enthralled by a catchy hit song.
