At the start of World War II, Salvatore Todaro commands the submarine Cappellini of the Regia Marina in his unique style: with a reinforced steel bow for improbable rammings, firing cannons while surfaced to confront the enemy face-to-face, and a crew armed with daggers for hand-to-hand combat. In October 1940, while patrolling the Atlantic, Todaro encounters the Belgian merchant ship Kabalo, which opens fire. After sinking the ship, Todaro defies orders and risks his life to save the 26 Belgian survivors, stating, "Because we are Italians."
