Tommy Cheong – A Maritime Tale in Urban Seating

Immerse yourself in the story of Sampan Benches, a thoughtful interpretation of traditional Eastern watercraft reimagined as urban furniture. Designed by Tommy Cheong for Singapore’s eclectic Holland Village, these benches draw their form from the classic Asian sampan, flat-bottomed craft historically used for fishing and river travel across Southeast Asia. Fashioned from native Tembusu wood, each slatted top is oiled to echo the decks of original sampan vessels. Their lacquered sides—offered in terracotta red and deep ocean blue—celebrate Singapore’s multicultural tapestry and maritime heritage.

Offered in three sizes, the benches adapt fluidly to space—whether clustered as a convivial social node or spaced for quiet reflection. Their modular arrangement mimics a gentle flotilla, welcoming travelers to pause, commune, and connect within the rhythm of the vibrant urban shore. With elegant curves, durable craftsmanship, and an oceanic sensibility, Sampan Benches translate seafaring tradition into sculptural seating for the modern city.
