Sun Tower by OPEN Architecture – Yantai’s Celestial Cultural Beacon

Perched along the Yantai seafront, Sun Tower — conceived by OPEN Architecture — is a commanding cultural hub sculpted by light, not just shape. Rising 50 m in layered concrete shells, its geometry echoes solar paths: its northern edge aligns with the equinox midday sun, a tunnel entrance captures winter solstice sunsets, while the amphitheater fronts the summer solstice sunrise to Zhifu Island. Inside, ramp-lined exhibition galleries spiral between shells, leading to a serene library and a “Phenomena Space” atop—where an oculus lets rainwater pool in rhythm with the hours and seasons.

The concave shell amplifies the sea’s whispers, while the surrounding plaza, etched with elliptical fossil-like rings and water channels, functions as an astronomical sundial by day and misty amphitheater by night. With passive cooling and community spaces — theater, café, digital gallery — Sun Tower is a luminous fusion of ancestral solar worship, public life, and coastal-modern architecture.
