Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) students have secured the prestigious Terra Carta Design Lab award with two groundbreaking projects: Shellf Life and BIOPOD. These innovations leverage natural waste to solve urgent climate challenges, bridging the gap between marine ecosystems and sustainable urban development.

The diversion of massive industrial waste from landfills and the creation of carbon-negative alternatives to traditional materials. Each winner: Shellf Life upcycles discarded mollusk shells into regenerative building tiles, turning restaurant waste into durable architectural solutions for coastal communities. BIOPOD utilizes fungal mycelium (mushrooms) to create bio-remediating structures that heal polluted environments. Both projects emphasize circularity—where "waste" from the sea and soil becomes the raw material for a resilient future. These artisanal, student-led designs prove that the next generation of coastal luxury lies in harmony with nature's own engineering.
