Without engine noise aboard a cruise liner, the environment features the serene sounds of waves slapping the craft, birds squabbling overhead, and wind fleeing about. It's this concept that upcoming luxury cruise liners Silenseas are based on. Silenseas were created by Chantiers de L'Atlantique and are powered by sails, which are both green and idyllic in aesthetic appeal. Silenseas will be available in 623 foot and 689 foot models, with the sail operating in tandem with a hybrid engine system. When there is no wind, these engines will pick up the slack. This system is slated to emit just half the emissions emitted by standard cruise liners. For those who are ready for something truly different and eco-friendly, Silenseas is bringing the novel idea of sails back to life with a working hybrid system.
