Combustible ice, which is also called flammable ice and methane hydrate, releases water and methane when it burns, and some are speculating that harvesting this ice could help to reduce mankind’s carbon footprint. But how would combustible ice, which exists in great abundance at the ocean floor, be harvested? Designers Xuejun Bai, Chucheng Pang, Lei Zhai, Yuyang Sun, and Dianao Liu have created a concept that could solve the challenges of such. The Drilling Water-Scraper is an inverted skyscraper that would reach the ocean bed to mine for combustible ice. The top of the unit would gather plastic waste from the ocean, providing an even better impact for the ocean and overall human carbon footprint. Stay tuned for more on the Drilling Water-Scraper.
